She spent her early childhood in Summit and the neighbouring towns before the family moved to Bernardsville, in the New Jersey hills. As a girl she took opera singing lessons with the voice teacher Estelle Liebling and sang in school productions, and at Bernardsville High School she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen as well as a performer. She studied drama at Vassar College and then at the Yale School of Drama, and moved to New York, where she quickly made her name on stage before her film career began with The Deer Hunter.
