1975 – 1993“I was born Daniel Dumile in Hounslow, London, in July 1971, to a Trinidadian mother and a Zimbabwean father, while my mother was visiting family; I had no memory of London, and I grew up on Long Island, in Long Beach, New York, a seaside city on a barrier island with a boardwalk and beaches, the eldest of five children. I stayed a British citizen all my life. I loved comic books and cartoons, and collected them, and my friends and family called me Doom, a play on my name. I started DJing the summer after third grade, and I was always making music. At Long Beach High School I was a shy kid, but I formed a group with my younger brother, Dingilizwe, who rapped and produced as DJ Subroc, and our friend Rodan, called KMD, and I rapped as Zev Love X. In 1989 we appeared on 3rd Bass's song The Gas Face, and in 1991 we released our first album, Mr. Hood, on Elektra. Our music was playful, positive and political. In 1993, my brother was taken from us, and our label dropped our second album. I withdrew from music for years. Then I came back, wearing a metal mask inspired by the Marvel villain Doctor Doom, as MF DOOM, the supervillain of rap, with Operation: Doomsday in 1999 and Madvillainy with Madlib in 2004, which many call one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. Long Beach remembers me, and fans have campaigned to name a street there after me.”
