1992 – 2005“Miley Cyrus was born Destiny Hope Cyrus in 1992 and spent her early childhood on the family's farm in the rolling country south of Nashville, around Franklin and Thompson's Station. Her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, had named her for the hope that she would achieve great things, but almost nobody used that name: she was such a cheerful baby that she was called Smiley, soon shortened to Miley. The farm was big, noisy and full of animals, siblings and music. Her father was a working country star, and guitars, tour stories and Nashville friends were part of ordinary life; her godmother was Dolly Parton. Her grandfather Ron Cyrus, a Kentucky state politician, was a strong, warm presence, and when she later changed her name legally to Miley Ray Cyrus, the Ray was in his honour. She went to Heritage Elementary, did cheerleading, and spent a lot of time outdoors among the horses and dogs. When she was eight, the family went to Toronto while her father filmed the series Doc, and there she saw a stage production of Mamma Mia! and decided she wanted to perform. She began taking acting and singing lessons, and at eleven she sent in an audition tape for a Disney show about a girl living a double life as a pop star. Hannah Montana made her famous before she was fifteen. Through every reinvention since, she has returned to the same roots: the southern twang, the love of country songwriting, and a Tennessee farmhouse of her own close to the land she grew up on.”
