📍Charleston, Mississippi, USA
1937 – 1955“Morgan Freeman was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in June 1937, and as a baby he was sent to live with his paternal grandmother in Charleston, a small cotton town on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. It was a rural, segregated world of fields, churches and dirt roads, and he spent his first six years there. After his grandmother died, he moved with his mother, living in Greenwood, Mississippi, Gary, Indiana, and Chicago, before returning to Greenwood. He made his acting debut at nine, playing the lead in a school play, and he has told the story of how, at twelve, he was made to enter a drama competition as punishment for pulling a girl's chair out from under her, and won. He discovered theatre, music and radio in Greenwood, and as a teenager he worked as a radio announcer on a local station. He loved films and dreamed of flying fighter planes. He graduated from Broad Street High School in Greenwood in 1955. He turned down a drama scholarship to join the US Air Force, where he worked as a radar technician before realising he would rather be in films. He moved to Los Angeles and New York and spent years in theatre before his film career took off in his fifties, with Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption and Million Dollar Baby. He has returned home: he lives on a farm near Charleston, and he co-owns a blues club, Ground Zero, in Clarksdale, keeping close to the Delta where he began.”
