1990 – 1999“Natalie Portman was born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem in June 1981, the only child of Avner, an Israeli fertility doctor, and Shelley, an American homemaker who later became her agent. When she was about three, the family moved to the United States, living in Washington, DC, and Connecticut before settling, around 1990, in Syosset, a leafy, comfortable suburb on the North Shore of Long Island, with good schools and a strong Jewish community. She went to the Solomon Schechter Day School, a Jewish school, and then to Syosset High School, where she was an outstanding student. She studied ballet and modern dance and spent summers at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, appearing in local productions. At about ten, eating at a pizza parlour, she was spotted by a scout for Revlon cosmetics, who encouraged her to model; she found modelling dull and chose acting instead, taking the stage name Portman, her grandmother's maiden name, to protect her family's privacy. At twelve she was cast as Mathilda in Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional, released in 1994, and she went on to appear in Heat, Beautiful Girls and the Star Wars prequels, while still at school. She insisted on finishing high school in Syosset, graduating in 1999, and then studied psychology at Harvard, saying she would rather be smart than a movie star. She won an Oscar for Black Swan in 2011.”
