📍Strafford, Vermont, USA
1997 – 2015“Noah Kahan was born in January 1997 and grew up in Strafford, a tiny town of farms, woods and white clapboard houses in the hills of eastern Vermont, near the Connecticut River and the New Hampshire border. His family owned a 133-acre tree farm there. His mother, Lauri Berkenkamp, was a writer and publisher of parenting books who taught him to write, and his father, Josh, worked in information technology and taught him to play guitar. He was the third of four children. As a boy he spent weekends camping on the family land while his father cleared space to build a house, and when he was in high school the family moved to Strafford for good. He went to Hanover High School across the river in New Hampshire. He grew up on folk and singer-songwriter records, and he began writing songs as a young boy. He has spoken openly about struggling with anxiety and depression as a teenager, and about how small-town life could feel both safe and suffocating. After school he signed a record deal and moved to Boston and later New York. But when the pandemic hit in 2020, he went home to Strafford, and there, in his parents' house and barn, he wrote the songs that became Stick Season. The 2022 album, named for the bare, grey season between autumn and winter in Vermont, became a huge hit, with songs about leaving and returning to a small New England town, and he has become one of Vermont's proudest exports.”
