📍Temecula, California, USA
2003 – 2016“Olivia Rodrigo was born in Murrieta, California, in February 2003 and grew up as an only child in neighbouring Temecula, a sunny suburban city in the hills of southern Riverside County, known for its wineries, hot-air balloons and new housing developments. Her father, Ronald, is a family therapist of Filipino heritage, the grandson of an immigrant from the Philippines, and her mother is a teacher of German and Irish descent. Her parents loved alternative rock, and she grew up hearing No Doubt, the White Stripes and the Smashing Pumpkins on the family stereo. She began singing lessons at five and was soon taking part in local talent shows and school musicals. At nine her parents started her on piano lessons, which she later admitted she hated at first, crying before every lesson, but which taught her the chords she would use to write songs. By her early teens she was writing her own songs about her life, her friends and her feelings, and making the hour-and-a-half drive to Los Angeles for auditions. She was proud of her Filipino heritage, and family gatherings were full of food and music. In 2015 she landed her first big role, in an American Girl film, and in 2016, at thirteen, she was cast in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark and moved to Los Angeles. Her debut single, drivers license, released in January 2021, broke streaming records, and its lyrics, about learning to drive through the suburbs, carried echoes of the ordinary suburban life she had grown up with in Temecula.”
