1948 – 1953“I was Virginia Hensley — Ginny — and in November 1948, when I was sixteen, Mama moved my brother, my sister and me into this little clapboard house at 608 South Kent Street in a working neighbourhood of Winchester. Daddy had gone, and money was tight, so I left school and went to work: plucking chickens at a poultry plant, cleaning buses and working the counter at the Greyhound station, then jerking sodas at Gaunt's Drugstore. At night I sang wherever they'd have me — on local radio, at dances and in supper clubs until three in the morning. Mama was a seamstress, and she was my partner in everything: she sewed my fringed cowgirl outfits by hand from the designs I drew, and drove me to every show and home again. I always said a throat infection as a girl had left me with a voice that boomed. I lived here until I married and became Patsy Cline. The house is now the Patsy Cline Historic House, a National Historic Landmark.”
