1987 – 1993“Pedro Pascal was born in Santiago, Chile, in April 1975. His parents, a child psychologist and a fertility doctor, opposed General Pinochet's military dictatorship, and when he was a baby they were forced to flee. The family found political asylum in Denmark and then settled in the United States, first in San Antonio, Texas, where his father worked as a doctor, and then, when Pedro was about eleven, in Orange County, California, around Newport Beach, a wealthy, sunny coastal area of harbours, beaches and suburbs. He grew up between cultures, the son of Chilean exiles in suburban America, speaking Spanish at home and English outside. He has spoken about being bullied after moving to Orange County, and about how films became his refuge; seeing Superman at four with his parents was a formative memory, and he watched films obsessively. As a boy he was a competitive swimmer, training seriously and competing at a high level, until he discovered that he loved performing more. He went to the Orange County School of the Arts, where he trained in acting, and he has credited it with giving him his first creative home. After graduating in 1993 he went to New York to study at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and spent two decades working in theatre and small television roles, often struggling to make ends meet. His breakthrough came as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones in 2014, followed by Narcos, The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. He has spoken proudly and movingly about his parents' bravery as refugees, and about the immigrant childhood that shaped him.”
