📍Garden District, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
1976 – 1994“Peyton Manning was born in New Orleans in March 1976, the middle of three sons of Archie Manning, the star quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, and Olivia, both originally from small-town Mississippi. The family lived in a handsome Greek Revival house on First Street in the Garden District, a leafy neighbourhood of grand nineteenth-century mansions, oak trees and wrought-iron balconies, and his parents still live there today. With his older brother, Cooper, and younger brother, Eli, he grew up in a loving, close-knit, football-mad home. The front yard and the streets around the house were the brothers' playing fields. They threw footballs through a tyre, played backyard games that often ended in fights, and went to Saints games to watch their father. Peyton was the most driven of the three, studying his father's game films and quizzing him about tactics. Archie, who had grown up in Drew, Mississippi, never pushed his sons into football, but they absorbed it anyway. At Isidore Newman School, a few blocks from home, Peyton played football and basketball, and for a season he threw touchdown passes to his older brother, Cooper, a star receiver whose career was later cut short by a spinal condition. Peyton went to the University of Tennessee and was the first pick in the 1998 NFL draft. With the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos he became one of the greatest quarterbacks in history, winning two Super Bowls, while Eli won two with the New York Giants. The Manning house on First Street has become a stop on Garden District walking tours.”
