1970 – 1988“Phil Mickelson was born in San Diego in June 1970, the son of Phil Sr., a former Navy pilot who became a commercial airline pilot, and Mary, and he grew up in the San Diego area with his older sister, Tina, and younger brother, Tim. He was naturally right-handed, but at about eighteen months, standing face to face with his father in the backyard, he copied his father's right-handed swing like a mirror image, and he has played golf left-handed ever since. His father's airline schedule gave him plenty of free time, and he built an extensive practice area in their San Diego backyard, with a putting green and a bunker, where Phil spent hours inventing short-game shots, flops, bump-and-runs and impossible recoveries, that later made him famous. Father and son played together several times a week. He was a confident, talkative boy who loved competition and was sure from an early age that he would become a great golfer. He went to the University of San Diego High School, graduating in 1988, and won a string of junior titles. At Arizona State University he won three NCAA individual titles, and in 1991, while still an amateur, he won a PGA Tour event. He went on to win six major championships, including three Masters, and in 2021, at fifty, he became the oldest major winner in history at the PGA Championship. The backyard practice green in San Diego, where he learned his wizardry around the greens, has become part of his legend.”
