📍Doylestown, Pennsylvania, USA
1979 – 1995“Alecia Beth Moore, known as Pink, was born in September 1979 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, a historic county town in Bucks County, about forty minutes north of Philadelphia, with leafy streets, old stone buildings and a busy main street. Her father, Jim, was a Vietnam veteran who sold insurance, played guitar and sang her Bob Dylan songs, and her mother, Judy, was an emergency-room nurse. She had asthma as a child, and she was a fearless, athletic girl who trained as a competitive gymnast from four to twelve. Her parents' marriage was stormy, and they divorced when she was young, a time she later wrote about in her song Family Portrait. She was a rebellious teenager in suburban Doylestown, skateboarding, dyeing her hair, exploring punk and hip-hop, and clashing with her mother. She has spoken openly about getting into trouble and experimenting with drugs as a young teenager before turning her life around. Music was her outlet: she wrote poems and songs, and sang at Central Bucks High School West, where she joined her first band. At around thirteen or fourteen she began sneaking into Philadelphia's clubs, where a DJ asked her to sing backing vocals for his hip-hop group and she landed a regular Friday-night spot at a club called Fever. A record executive spotted her there, and she joined an R&B girl group called Choice, which signed with LaFace Records in 1995. When it broke up, she went solo as Pink, and her first album came out in 2000. She has stayed close to her father, who first taught her to play guitar, and her songs often return to the family and town that shaped her.”
