📍Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece
1921 – 1922“I was born on the dining-room table at Mon Repos, a neoclassical villa set in woods on the edge of Corfu town, in June 1921 — a prince of Greece and Denmark, the youngest child and only son after four sisters. I was eighteen months old when a revolution overthrew my uncle the king and my father was put on trial. A British warship was sent to carry us away, and I travelled into exile in a cot made from an orange box. After that I never really had a home of my own: we lived on the charity of relatives near Paris, my mother became seriously ill and spent years in clinics, my father settled in the south of France, and my sisters married and went to Germany. I was passed between uncles, grandmothers and schools in France, Germany and Scotland. Gordonstoun and then the Royal Navy became my family, until I married Lilibet. Mon Repos is now a museum in a public park, the house I was carried from as a baby.”
