📍Chaikovskogo Street 48, Klin, Moscow Oblast 141600, Russia
1892 – 1893“I spent the last years of my life at my estate in Klin, outside Moscow, which I bought in 1892 and where I composed some of my final works. The Klin house was a wooden dacha surrounded by birch forest, and after the social pressures of Moscow and St Petersburg it provided the solitude I needed. I walked for hours every day regardless of weather — the walks were where the musical ideas came. The Pathétique Symphony and the Nutcracker were Klin works. I was a deeply private man whose inner life was in perpetual conflict with the public expectations of a famous composer, and Klin gave me the privacy I could not find in the cities. I died in St Petersburg in November 1893, nine days after the première of the Pathétique. The cause of death has been disputed ever since.”
