1913 – 1922“I was born in January 1913 in the small frame house my father, Frank, built from a kit ordered out of the Sears catalogue, on twelve acres where he tried to grow lemons in Yorba Linda. I was the second of five sons. My mother, Hannah, was a devout Quaker, gentle and strong; she was the saint of our family. The land was poor and the lemon ranch failed, but I remember it as a place of sunlight and hard work, and of lying awake at night listening to the whistle of the trains passing in the distance and dreaming of the far-off places they were going. In 1922, when I was nine, we moved to Whittier, where my father ran a gas station and grocery store that we all worked in. Two of my brothers died young, Arthur and Harold, and those losses marked our family deeply. I became president, and resigned the office. The house where I was born still stands on its original spot, beside my presidential library.”
