📍Rihanna Drive (Westbury New Road), St Michael, Bridgetown, Barbados
1988 – 2005“Robyn Rihanna Fenty grew up in a modest three-bedroom bungalow on Westbury New Road, a street of colourful wooden houses a short walk from downtown Bridgetown. She lived there from about five until sixteen with her parents and brothers, and as a girl she helped her father sell clothes from a stall on the street — hustling, she has called it. Home life was not always easy; her parents' marriage was troubled, and she has said the stress gave her severe headaches as a child. She sang constantly, entered and won her school's beauty pageant at Combermere School, and formed a girl group with two classmates. At fifteen, a visiting American producer, Evan Rogers, heard them sing, and before long she was flying to New York to record. In 2017 the government of Barbados renamed her childhood street Rihanna Drive, unveiling a plaque outside the bungalow, and she has returned there with her own children. Barbados, she says, is in everything she does — the music, the food, the spirit.”
