Salvador Allende

World leaders

📍Providencia, Santiago, Chile

1908 – 1973

“I was born Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens on the 26th of June 1908 in Valparaíso, Chile, the son of a lawyer. I became a physician and a Marxist politician, and on the 4th of November 1970 I became the world's first democratically elected socialist head of state. I governed Chile for three years, nationalising the copper mines, expanding education, redistributing land. On the 11th of September 1973 General Pinochet's forces, backed by the CIA, bombed the presidential palace. I died in La Moneda — whether by my own hand or another's remains disputed. Santiago was my city, the Andes above it always visible, and I believed to the end that a peaceful road to socialism was possible.”

👍 LovedThe democratic path — the conviction that socialism could be achieved through elections rather than revolution. The copper nationalisation that returned Chile's wealth to Chileans. The Andes above Santiago always present.
👎 DislikedThe CIA-backed coup that ended the experiment. The violence of September 11 1973. The knowledge that the peaceful road was not permitted by those with the power to prevent it.
