📍Arlington, Virginia, USA
1976 – 1982“Sandra Bullock was born in Arlington, Virginia, in July 1964. Her father, John, was an American Army employee and voice coach, and her mother, Helga, was a German opera singer and voice teacher, and Sandra spent most of her first twelve years in Nuremberg, Germany, where she grew up speaking German. She often travelled with her mother on European opera tours, sang in the children's chorus at the Nuremberg opera house, and took ballet and singing lessons. When she was about twelve, the family moved back to Arlington, a busy suburb just across the Potomac from Washington, DC, where her father worked as a contractor for the Pentagon. The move was a shock. She arrived with European clothes and habits and felt like an outsider, and she has spoken about being teased by other children. But she adapted. At Washington-Lee High School she became a cheerleader and threw herself into school plays, and she discovered she could win people over by making them laugh. Her younger sister, Gesine, grew up alongside her. After graduating in 1982 she studied drama at East Carolina University, then moved to New York, where she worked as a bartender, waitress and coat-checker while taking acting classes. Her breakthrough came in 1994 with Speed, and she went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, winning an Oscar for The Blind Side. Hers was a double childhood, of opera houses in Germany and cheerleading in Virginia, and both shaped her.”
