📍Tungipara, Gopalganj, Bangladesh

1920 – 1975

“I was born Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the 17th of March 1920 in Tungipara, a village in the Gopalganj district of what was then Bengal. I became the founding father of Bangladesh — the leader whose speech on the 7th of March 1971 sent millions of Bengalis into a war of independence against Pakistan that cost three million lives before Indian intervention ended it in December 1971. I declared Bangladesh independent on the 26th of March 1971. I was held prisoner in Pakistan during the war and returned to Dhaka on the 10th of January 1972 to lead the new nation. I was assassinated with most of my family on the 15th of August 1975 in a military coup. The Tungipara village, the Bengali language, the paddy fields of the delta — these were the Bangladesh I fought to bring into being.”

👍 LovedThe 7th of March 1971 speech that launched a nation. Bengali independence and the creation of Bangladesh. The Tungipara village and the delta landscape of Bengal.
👎 DislikedThe political violence and authoritarianism of the final years. The assassination with my family in our Dhaka residence. The three million deaths of the liberation war.
