1976 – 1977“My parents' garage at 2066 Crist Drive in Los Altos, California is where Apple Computer Company was founded in 1976 — Steve Wozniak and I working on the first Apple computers on the workbench where my father had taught me to take things apart and understand how they worked. The garage was modest: a suburban Los Altos home my parents bought in 1968, a single-car garage with a workbench along one wall. My father Paul had been a machinist and he conveyed to me the idea that a craftsman's mark on the back of a cabinet, where no one would ever see it, was still worth making — because you would know. That ethic of invisible quality ran through everything I ever made. The neighbourhood of Los Altos, the Valley's particular mixture of engineering culture and California optimism, the garage — these were the physical conditions in which the idea of Apple became real.”
