📍Atherton, California, USA
1965 – 1968“Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona, in May 1948, and her father's career as a business executive moved the family from city to city across the American West: Phoenix, Albuquerque, El Paso, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. Her grandfather, A.J. Nicks, was a struggling country singer who taught her to sing duets with him when she was four. In 1965 the family moved to Atherton, a leafy, wealthy town on the San Francisco Peninsula, between San Francisco and the orchards of what would become Silicon Valley. She had already got a Goya guitar for her sixteenth birthday and written her first song, and she had sung in a folk-rock band at her previous high school. At Menlo-Atherton High School she joined in the folk and rock scene of the Bay Area in the mid-1960s, the era of Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin. In 1966, at a Young Life gathering, she heard a boy from school, Lindsey Buckingham, playing The Mamas & the Papas' California Dreamin' and joined in with the harmony. It was the start of one of the great musical partnerships. After graduating, she studied at San Jose State and joined Lindsey's band, Fritz, and later they moved to Los Angeles and recorded as Buckingham Nicks. In 1975 they joined Fleetwood Mac, and with songs like Rhiannon, Dreams and Landslide she became one of rock's most iconic voices. It was on the peninsula, in those few high school years, that she found both her voice and her great musical partner.”
