📍20 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, New York 11771, USA
1885 – 1919“I bought Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, Long Island in 1884, the year my wife Alice and my mother both died on the same day — the 14th of February, Valentine's Day. I went west to the Badlands of Dakota to grieve, to hunt, to become someone who could survive what had happened. I came back to Sagamore Hill two years later with a second wife, Edith, and we made it a home of extraordinary vitality — six children, constant guests, books everywhere, the piazza where I worked and thought and received visitors. I was President from 1901 to 1909 and I always came back here. The Long Island Sound was visible from the house, the woods were full of birds I could identify by call, and the energy of the place matched my own.”
