1978 – 1980“Tom Cruise was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York — the fourth in his family to carry the name — and grew up on the move. His father, an electrical engineer, followed work from place to place, and by his late teens Tom had been through fifteen schools in fourteen years. In Beacon Hill, an Ottawa suburb, he mowed lawns, delivered papers, broke a leg attempting a backflip off a roof, and found drama when a fourth-grade teacher had him improvise a play for a school festival. Later came Kentucky, and a year at a Cincinnati seminary studying for the priesthood. Like his mother and sisters he had dyslexia, and as the perpetual new kid he learned to read a room fast. He has described his father as a bully; when his parents split, his mother, a special-education teacher, held four children together on very little. They finally settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, a leafy commuter town lit by old gas lamps. In his senior year a knee injury ended his wrestling season, a teacher nudged him towards the school's Guys and Dolls, and playing Nathan Detroit he felt an audience respond. He graduated in 1980, set the Mapother aside, kept Cruise, and left for New York with his family's blessing.”
