📍Missouri City, TX, USA
1991 – 2009“Jacques Bermon Webster II was born in Houston in April 1991. From the age of one to six he lived with his grandmother in South Park, a rough neighbourhood of south Houston, and then his family moved to Missouri City, a middle-class suburb just south-west of the city in Fort Bend County. His father, Jacques Webster, was a soul musician and drummer, and his grandfather was a jazz composer, and music was part of the family; Travis began playing drums and piano as a small child. He went to Elkins High School in Missouri City, where he took part in school theatre and began making beats and rapping seriously, influenced by Kid Cudi, Kanye West and the Houston rap scene. He graduated a year early, at seventeen, and went to the University of Texas at San Antonio, but left after two years to pursue music, which caused a painful rift with his parents, who had hoped for a different path. He moved to New York and then to Los Angeles, sleeping on friends' couches, determined to succeed, and took his stage name from his favourite uncle, Travis, and his hero, Kid Cudi, whose real name is Scott Mescudi. In 2012 he signed with Kanye West's GOOD Music, and his albums Rodeo and Astroworld, named after a lost Houston theme park he loved as a boy, made him one of the biggest stars in music. He has never forgotten Houston, and his Cactus Jack Foundation supports young people in the city, including scholarships at historically Black colleges and a design programme for local students.”
