📍Wilbur Wright Birthplace, near Millville, Henry County, IN 47346, USA
1867 – 1868“I was born on 16 April 1867 on a small farm in Henry County, Indiana, a few miles from the village of Millville, the third son of Milton and Susan Wright. My father had bought the five-acre farm two years earlier. It was a simple frame farmhouse surrounded by flat fields and woodland, and my father, a minister and teacher in the United Brethren Church, rode out to preach in local churches while my mother kept the household and the garden. I was too young to remember the farm; within a couple of years my father's church work took us away, first to Hartsville and then to Dayton, Ohio, where my brother Orville was born in 1871. But my family's character was already formed here: a home full of books and faith, a father who prized learning and independent thought, and a mother with a gift for mechanics who could make or mend almost anything. My parents taught us that if you wanted something, you could build it yourself. Orville and I grew up to run a bicycle shop in Dayton, and from there we studied birds, kites and gliders until, in December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, we made the world's first powered, controlled flights. The state of Indiana bought my birthplace in 1929. The original house was later lost, but in 1973 a careful reproduction was built on its foundations, and today the Wilbur Wright Birthplace and Museum, with a full-sized replica of our 1903 Flyer, welcomes visitors among the same fields.”
