📍Abbott, Texas 76621, USA
1933 – 1951“Willie Nelson was born in 1933 in Abbott, a small cotton-farming town in central Texas, in the depths of the Depression. His mother left when he was six months old and his father soon after, so he and his older sister Bobbie were raised by their paternal grandparents, who had studied music by mail-order courses and taught it to others. They put instruments into the children's hands early: Bobbie learned on her grandmother's pump organ, and Willie got his first guitar at six and wrote his first song at seven. On Sundays the family sang at Abbott's small Methodist church, and gospel harmony became the foundation of everything. Money was always short, and the children picked cotton in the summer heat, listening to the songs of the Mexican and Black field workers around them. At ten, Willie was playing guitar in a touring Czech polka band. He and Bobbie played music together for the rest of her life, and Abbott remains the place he calls home.”
