📍517 High Road, Leytonstone, London E11 4PB, England
1899 – 1925“I was born on the 13th of August 1899 above my father's grocery shop in Leytonstone, then a quiet suburb at the northeastern edge of London. Leytonstone was respectable lower-middle-class — the kind of neighbourhood where propriety was important and the unusual was regarded with suspicion — and I was an unusual child: fat, solitary, observant, frightened of the world in ways I converted into a lifelong study of fear. My father once sent me to the local police station with a note, and the officer locked me in a cell for five minutes as a punishment. I was five years old. That experience — the terror of confinement and helplessness — became the engine of fifty years of cinema.”
