📍La Madrague, Saint-Tropez, Var, France
1958 – 2025“I grew up in a strict, comfortable family in Paris's 16th arrondissement, where I trained as a ballet dancer at the Conservatoire and was expected to be a well-behaved young lady. A magazine cover at fifteen led to films, and And God Created Woman, which we shot in Saint-Tropez in 1956, made me — and the little fishing port — famous around the world. In 1958, on impulse, I bought a fisherman's cottage right on the water on Canoubiers Bay, just outside the village, among the pines, and called it La Madrague. I made it my refuge: simple rooms, bare feet, the sea at the door. In the early years there were parties with friends like Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo, and boats full of photographers anchored in the bay. In 1973 I gave up the cinema to devote my life to animals, and La Madrague filled with the dogs, cats and other creatures I rescued. In 1992 I gave the house to my foundation, but I went on living there for the rest of my life. It can only be glimpsed from the sea.”
