1992 – 2010“Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was born in October 1992, the daughter of a Dominican father and a Trinidadian mother, and grew up between her grandmother's apartment in Washington Heights, in upper Manhattan, and the Highbridge neighbourhood of the South Bronx, a hilly area of apartment buildings above the Harlem River. She went to P.S. 128 Audubon in Washington Heights, a school for immigrant families, and spent much of her childhood at her grandmother's crowded apartment with dozens of cousins, which she says gave her her famous accent. When her family moved to the Bronx, in sixth grade, she was bullied over her clothes and learned to toughen up. She was loud, funny and outspoken, and she loved to perform. She went to the Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and Technology in the Bronx, and worked as a cashier at a supermarket in Lower Manhattan. Money was always a struggle, and she later worked as a dancer to pay for college at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, which she left before finishing. She became famous through her funny, frank videos on social media and on the television show Love and Hip Hop: New York, and in 2017 her single Bodak Yellow reached number one, making her the first solo female rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill. In 2019 she became the first solo woman to win the Grammy for best rap album. She calls herself a regular, degular, shmegular girl from the Bronx, and she remains proud of Highbridge and Washington Heights.”
