1863 – 1944“I was born Edvard Munch on the 12th of December 1863 in Løten but grew up in Oslo — then Christiania. My mother died of tuberculosis when I was five. My father was a military doctor of intense religious melancholy. My sister Sophie died of tuberculosis at fifteen. The combination of death and anxiety and northern Protestant guilt that formed my childhood became the subject matter of The Scream and the Frieze of Life. I bought the Ekely estate in Oslo in 1916 and lived there for the rest of my life, surrounded by thousands of paintings which I left to the city of Oslo.”
