1945 – 1964

“I was born in September 1945 in Munich, just months after the end of the war, and I grew up in Giesing, a working-class district on the east bank of the Isar, with my older brother, Walter. My father, Franz, was a postal worker who thought football was not a proper job, and my mother, Antonie, kept house in our small flat. Munich was in ruins, and we played among the rubble. From our window we could see the pitch of SC 1906 München, the local club, which drew thousands of spectators. I started playing for SC 1906 at nine, and I was always a forward then. Like most boys in Giesing I supported TSV 1860 München, and it was my dream to play for them. But when I was thirteen, our club ran short of money, and I planned to move to 1860. Then, at a youth tournament in Neubiberg, I played against 1860's under-14 team, and the match turned nasty; one of their players slapped me. After that I refused to join them, and in 1959 I joined Bayern Munich's youth team instead, a small club then. That slap changed football history. I left school and trained as an insurance salesman while playing in Bayern's youth teams, and I made my first-team debut in 1964. As Der Kaiser, I invented the role of the attacking sweeper, won the World Cup as captain in 1974 and as manager in 1990, and won three European Cups with Bayern. Giesing remains proud of me, and the street where I grew up is on the football trails of the city.”

👍 LovedPlaying in the street with my brother, the SC 1906 pitch, and Bayern
