📍Hellerup, Gentofte, Denmark
1963 – 1980“Lars Ulrich was born in December 1963 in Gentofte, a prosperous municipality on the northern edge of Copenhagen, and grew up in Hellerup, a leafy, seaside suburb of grand villas along the Øresund coast. His father, Torben Ulrich, was a top tennis player, once called the most fascinating figure in the game, and also a jazz musician and critic, and his mother was Lone. Jazz greats such as Dexter Gordon, Lars's godfather, Sonny Rollins and Don Cherry visited the family home. In 1973, when Lars was nine, his father took him to see Deep Purple at a stadium in Copenhagen where Torben had played tennis, and the concert changed his life. He made a drum kit out of cardboard boxes and pretended to be Ian Paice, and he bought every hard rock record he could find, from Deep Purple to Status Quo. His grandmother bought him his first real drum kit when he was about thirteen. He was also a talented tennis player, highly ranked in Denmark for his age, and he planned to follow his father onto the tennis circuit. In 1980, when he was sixteen, the family moved to Newport Beach, California, so Lars could train as a professional tennis player, but he discovered the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and decided to become a drummer instead. In 1981 he placed an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper, which James Hetfield answered, and they formed Metallica. He became a driving force behind one of the biggest bands in the world, and in 2017 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by the Danish queen.”
