Queen Margrethe II

Royalty📍 Copenhagen📍 Denmark

📍Amalienborg, 1257 Copenhagen, Denmark

from 1940

“Margrethe was born in April 1940 at Frederik VIII's Palace, part of the Amalienborg palace complex in Copenhagen, just a week after Nazi Germany occupied Denmark, and her birth was greeted as a ray of hope in a dark time. She grew up at Amalienborg and was tutored privately there before going to Zahle's School in Copenhagen. As a girl she was not expected to become queen, until a 1953 referendum changed the constitution to allow women to inherit the throne. She studied prehistoric archaeology at Cambridge, then political science in Aarhus, Paris and London, and joined archaeological digs in Italy and elsewhere. A gifted artist, she illustrated the Danish edition of The Lord of the Rings under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer, and designed costumes and sets for ballet and theatre. She reigned for fifty-two years, abdicating in January 2024 in favour of her son, King Frederik X. Amalienborg, with its four palaces around an octagonal square, remains her family's home.”
