📍Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil
1969 – 1989“Massimiliano Antonio Cavalera was born in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, in August 1969, the son of an Italian father, Graziano Cavalera, who worked for the Italian consulate, and a Brazilian mother, Vania, who had been a model. He grew up in Belo Horizonte with his younger brother, Igor, in a comfortable home, until their father died suddenly when Max was nine, leaving the family in financial crisis. The loss hit the brothers hard, and music became their escape. They discovered Kiss, Black Sabbath and Motörhead, and then the extreme sound of Venom and thrash metal, and they spent their days listening to records and playing. Max played guitar, and Igor drums, and in 1984, when Max was fourteen and Igor thirteen, they formed Sepultura in Belo Horizonte, taking the name, which means grave in Portuguese, from a Motörhead song. They rehearsed in the bohemian neighbourhood of Santa Tereza, playing with borrowed instruments and very little money, and became part of a small but passionate Brazilian metal scene, playing local shows and recording raw, fast music. Sepultura's albums, Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots, which blended thrash with Brazilian tribal rhythms, made them the most famous Brazilian metal band in the world. Max left Sepultura in 1996 and formed Soulfly, and later Cavalera Conspiracy with Igor. Belo Horizonte is proud of the brothers who put Brazilian metal on the map, and Max has never forgotten his roots in Minas Gerais.”
