📍ul. Kopernika 15/17, 87-100 Toruń, Poland
1473 – 1483“I was born in 1473 in this tall Gothic brick house on what was then St Anne's Street in Toruń, a thriving Hanseatic trading city on the Vistula. It was a granary house, as the merchants built them — living rooms below, storage lofts above for grain and goods. My father, Nicolaus the elder, was a wealthy copper merchant who had come from Kraków and married into the Watzenrodes, one of Toruń's leading families; my grandfather had given the house to my parents. My father died when I was about ten, and my uncle Lucas Watzenrode, later bishop of Warmia, took charge of my education, sending me to Kraków, Bologna and Padua. I spent most of my life as a church canon at Frombork, watching the sky from a tower, and there I worked out that the Earth goes around the Sun. Toruń remembers me everywhere: my statue stands in the market square, and the house is now the Nicolaus Copernicus House museum — where, in honour of my city, visitors can also learn to make Toruń gingerbread.”
