📍Hill Top, Near Sawrey, Ambleside LA22 0LF, UK
1905 – 1943“I grew up in a big, quiet house in South Kensington, educated by governesses and kept company by rabbits, mice, a hedgehog and a bat that I smuggled into the schoolroom and drew from life. Our long family holidays in the Lake District were where I truly breathed. In 1905, with the royalties from Peter Rabbit, I bought Hill Top, a small working farm in Near Sawrey, and it became the world of my little books. Tom Kitten and his sisters tumble about my cottage garden; Jemima Puddle-Duck lays her eggs in the rhubarb patch; Samuel Whiskers scurries through these very rooms and staircases; the village shop and lanes are drawn in The Pie and the Patty-Pan. Farming changed me. I learned to breed Herdwick sheep, the hardy native breed of the fells, and I bought up farms and land so they could never be broken up for building. In my will I left Hill Top and some four thousand acres to the National Trust, so this landscape could stay as I loved it.”
