Residence 1

📍Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica

1945 – 1955

“Nine Mile is in the hills of Saint Ann — green country, red roads, and the smell of wood smoke from cook fires at dawn. My mother Cedella raised me here. The rock I slept against as a child I later described in Talking Blues — my pillow, my meditation. I left for Kingston at fourteen, but Nine Mile never left me. When I died in 1981 they brought me home and laid me in the mausoleum beside my mother's house, with my red Gibson guitar and a football and some herbs.”

👍 LovedThe hills of Saint Ann — the cleanest air and the deepest quiet I have ever known anywhere in the world
👎 DislikedThe poverty that made my mother's life so hard and that drove me to Kingston to find another kind of life

Residence 2

📍First Street, Trench Town, Kingston 12, Jamaica

1955 – 1966

“My mother brought me to Trench Town when I was ten years old, after my father died. The government yards were concrete tenements arranged around shared courtyards — no privacy, not much space, but music everywhere. Joe Higgs taught guitar in the yard, and that is where I met Bunny and Peter, and where the Wailers became what they were. People ask why so much of my music sounds like it was written in pain and hope at the same time — it was written here, where both things were true simultaneously. Trench Town gave me everything I needed to say.”

👍 LovedThe communal yard where we played music every evening — twenty musicians sharing ideas in a space barely large enough for all of us
👎 DislikedThe poverty and violence that the government built around us and then blamed on us — Trench Town was never what they said it was

Residence 3

📍56 Hope Road, Kingston 10, Jamaica

1975 – 1981

“Hope Road was more than a house — it was a compound, a rehearsal space, a headquarters. The Wailers practised in the yard. Lawyers and journalists and fans and politicians came and went through the gate. On the third of December 1976, gunmen came through too — I was shot in the arm two days before the Smile Jamaica concert. I played the concert anyway. When you decide to do something, you do it. This is where I decided everything.”

👍 LovedThe ackee tree in the yard, and playing football in the mornings before anyone else was awake
👎 DislikedThe constant pressure from all sides — politics wanted to use me, which was not what the music was for
