1989 – 2003

“Yohan Blake was born in December 1989 in the parish of St. James, in north-western Jamaica, around Montego Bay, the sixth of seven children of Shirley and Veda Blake. The family lived in a cramped two-bedroom house, his father worked as a bartender and tailor, and money was tight; as a boy he sometimes missed school to try to earn a little money for food. His first sporting love was cricket, and he was a fast bowler. A coach, Carlton Solan, spotted his speed at primary school, and at St. Jago High School in Spanish Town the principal noticed how fast he ran in to bowl and urged him to try sprinting. In 2007 he anchored St. Jago's relay team to a Penn Relays high school record. He went on to win the 2011 world 100 metres title and Olympic silver medals in the 100 and 200 metres in 2012, and he still plays cricket in the off-season.”

👍 LovedCricket and fast bowling, and Jamaica's sprinting culture
