📍Worksop, Nottinghamshire, UK
1958 – 1964“Paul Bruce Dickinson was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, in August 1958, to very young parents, and for his first years he was raised by his grandparents in the mining town, while his parents worked elsewhere. His grandfather worked at the coalface at the local colliery, and his grandmother kept house, and Bruce later wrote about those years in his song Born in '58. He started school at Manton Primary School in Worksop, and he remembered dancing to the Beatles' She Loves You as a small boy. When he was about six, his parents, who had started a successful business, took him to Sheffield, where he went to a primary school at Manor Top and then a small private school, Sharrow Vale Junior. He moved so often that he found it hard to make close friends, and he became very self-reliant. At thirteen his parents sent him to Oundle School, a public boarding school in Northamptonshire, where he was bullied by older boys, but where he co-founded the school's wargames society, joined the Combined Cadet Force and discovered heavy rock, especially Deep Purple. He also tried his hand at drama and fencing, which became a lifelong passion. He went on to study history at Queen Mary College in London while singing in bands, and in 1981 he joined Iron Maiden, singing on The Number of the Beast and Run to the Hills. He became a commercial airline pilot, flying the band's own jumbo jet, Ed Force One, as well as a fencer, author and broadcaster. Worksop remembers the boy who grew up in a miner's house.”
