📍Edendale, Southland 9893, New Zealand
1899 – 1915“I grew up on the family farm at Edendale, out east of Invercargill in the deep south of New Zealand — about as far from the world's racetracks as a boy could be. My twin sister died at birth; I lived, and I lived for speed. I would ride the fastest horse we had flat across the paddocks, never mind my father's grumbling. When the first cars and motorcycles and aeroplanes started appearing, I ached for them. That Southland farm was quiet and hard and slow, and it filled me with a lifelong, stubborn hunger to go faster than anyone thought a man from nowhere ever could.”
