📍Ōtāhuhu, Auckland 1640, New Zealand
1942 – 1960“I grew up in Ōtāhuhu, a working-class, industrial corner of South Auckland, the doctor's son in a street of labourers. My father was a GP with a socialist heart who took the Labour side and never pressed a patient who could not pay; my mother kept us Methodist and upright. I sang in the church choir, joined the Boys' Brigade, and learned early — from my father's surgery and our own kitchen table — that you measure a society by how it treats its weakest. That ordinary South Auckland street, and a father who lived his principles, made the Prime Minister I became and the welfare state I would fight to defend.”
