1978 – 1984“Russell Crowe was born in Wellington in 1964 and moved to Sydney with his family at four. His parents, Alex and Jocelyn, worked as caterers on film and television sets, and young Russell spent much of his childhood around crews and actors, appearing as an extra and in small roles as a child. Sydney's suburbs and film sets gave him an early sense of how stories were made, and of the camaraderie of a working crew. In 1978, when he was fourteen, the family came home to Auckland, where his father took up hotel management. Russell attended Auckland Grammar School, where his cousins Martin and Jeff Crowe, later New Zealand cricket captains, had also studied, and then Mount Roskill Grammar School. He was a restless, rebellious teenager, more interested in rock and roll than school. With friends he played in a school band, and under the stage name Russ Le Roq he released singles such as I Just Wanna Be Like Marlon Brando, performing in Auckland pubs and clubs. He left school at sixteen and spent his late teens in Auckland working odd jobs, performing music and acting in local theatre, including a touring production of The Rocky Horror Show. Those years taught him resilience and a love of performing. He returned to Australia in the mid-1980s, made his name in Romper Stomper, and went on to win an Academy Award for Gladiator. His Auckland years of music and stagecraft shaped the performer he became.”
