1904 – 1920“I was born Archibald Alexander Leach on the 18th of January 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, in a terraced house in a working-class neighbourhood. My father was a trouser presser, our home modest. My mother Elsie was committed to a mental institution when I was nine, and my father told me she had gone on holiday and then later said she had died. I discovered the truth when I was thirty-one. In the meantime I had run away to join an acrobatic troupe at fourteen, reinvented myself so completely that Archibald Leach of Horfield became Cary Grant of Hollywood, and constructed a persona of such elegant ease that the world never suspected it was constructed at all.”
