📍Royal Quarter, Alexandria, Egypt

“I ruled from a palace that stood at the very edge of the Mediterranean, its white marble colonnades catching the sea light each morning. The palace complex was a city within a city — libraries, audience halls, and gardens stretching down to the harbour where my fleet rode at anchor. Julius Caesar first came to me here, and later Mark Antony, and it was within these walls that I fought with every tool available to me — diplomacy, intelligence, and sheer force of will — to preserve Egypt from becoming another Roman province. The Pharos lighthouse blazed just offshore, its fire visible for fifty miles, guiding ships from every corner of the known world into our harbour. Alexandria was the greatest city on earth, and this palace its jewelled heart.”

👍 LovedThe luminous Mediterranean light, the proximity to the Great Library of Alexandria, the cosmopolitan energy of a city where Greek, Egyptian, Jewish and Roman cultures all met.
👎 DislikedThe relentless political pressure from Rome and the constant threat of betrayal from within my own court.

Residence 2

📍Royal Palace Quarter (Brucheion), Alexandria, Egypt

“I was born Kleopatra Philopator around 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt, into the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled Egypt since Alexander the Great's death three centuries before. The royal palace complex on the Brucheion peninsula overlooked the Great Harbour and the Pharos lighthouse across the water — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World visible from my childhood windows. I was the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language; my predecessors had governed Egypt for three centuries without speaking to its people directly. I also learned eight other languages. I ruled Egypt from the age of eighteen, formed alliances with Caesar and then with Antony to preserve Egyptian independence against Roman power, and died at thirty-nine when that independence could no longer be maintained. The palace, the harbour, the city that contained the greatest library in the ancient world — this was where I was formed and where I chose to end.”

👍 LovedThe extraordinary intellectual culture of Alexandria — the Library, the Museum, the concentration of the ancient world's knowledge in a single city. The palace's view of the Great Harbour and the Pharos. The Egyptian language and culture that I was the first of my dynasty to engage with as a ruler who genuinely spoke to her people.
👎 DislikedThe Roman power that ultimately absorbed Egypt regardless of my alliances. The Ptolemaic dynastic violence that required ruthlessness toward my own siblings. The knowledge that the ancient world's greatest empire was steadily eliminating every smaller rival.
