📍Amarna (Akhetaten), Minya Governorate, Egypt
1341 BC – 1332 BC“I was born Tutankhaten — living image of the Aten — most likely in Akhetaten, the new capital my father, Akhenaten, built in the empty desert on the east bank of the Nile, midway between Thebes and Memphis, and dedicated to the sun-disc alone. It was a city of perhaps thirty thousand people, with broad avenues, palaces and open-air temples where the sun's rays fell straight onto the altars. I spent my childhood there among my family and the royal court. I became pharaoh at around nine, after my father's death, and within a few years my advisers led Egypt back to the old gods: I took the name Tutankhamun, living image of Amun, the court returned to Thebes and Memphis, and my boyhood city was abandoned to the sand. I walked with a cane — many were buried with me — and I loved hunting from my chariot. I reigned for about ten years. My small tomb in the Valley of the Kings was forgotten for more than three thousand years, until Howard Carter found it almost intact in 1922.”
