1918“I was born Gamal Abdel Nasser Hussein on the 15th of January 1918 in Beni Mor, a village in the Asyut province of Upper Egypt, the son of a postal worker. I grew up in Alexandria and Cairo, joined the army, and in 1952 led the Free Officers revolution that ended the monarchy. I became President of Egypt in 1956 and immediately nationalised the Suez Canal — the act that made me the hero of Arab nationalism. Britain, France, and Israel invaded. The United States forced them to withdraw. I had faced down the old colonial powers with a single decision. The High Dam at Aswan was my monument to development. I died in 1970 at fifty-two, having fought three wars with Israel and lost them all, but having permanently changed what Arab self-respect meant.”
