Residence 1

📍Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk PE35 6AB, United Kingdom

1961 – 1975

“I was born at Park House on the first of July 1961, the third daughter of Viscount Althorp and Frances Roche. Park House was part of the Sandringham estate — a ten-bedroom house leased by the Royal Family to my parents — which meant I grew up literally inside the shadow of royalty, though I did not yet understand what that would come to mean. My parents' marriage was unhappy and ended in a bitter divorce when I was seven, which was then considered deeply unusual and rather shameful. My mother lost custody and left. I grew up with the particular loneliness of children who are provided for materially and attended to inadequately in every other way. I was not a clever student but I felt things intensely, and I understood from childhood that the feelings of those around me were somehow my responsibility — a conviction that later gave me my work and cost me almost everything else.”

👍 LovedThe Sandringham grounds, where I roamed freely as a child in a way that became impossible once I was known to everyone
👎 DislikedThe divorce — the day my mother left was the day childhood ended, though I was only seven and had no language for what had happened

Residence 2

📍Althorp, Northampton NN7 4HQ, United Kingdom

1975 – 1981

“My father inherited Althorp in 1975 when my grandfather died, and we moved from Sandringham to the great house in Northamptonshire when I was fourteen. Althorp was a different order of thing entirely — one of the finest private houses in England, with paintings by Rubens and Reynolds, furniture that had served the Spencer family for three centuries, and the particular weight of inherited expectation that saturates every room of a house like that. I was not well-suited to stately homes. I was better with people than with paintings, more at ease in kitchens than in state apartments. The years at Althorp were the years of becoming — of a shy, not academically gifted girl from an unhappy family working out who she might be before the fairy tale arrived and made that question, for a while, impossible to answer honestly. I became a nursery school assistant and then the Princess of Wales in fairly rapid succession. The girl from Althorp is the one I have always missed most.”

👍 LovedThe park and the lake — the natural parts of Althorp where the grandeur retreated and it was possible to simply be in a place rather than performing within it
👎 DislikedThe weight of the house itself — three centuries of Spencer family expectation in every corridor, and no particular template for what a girl was supposed to do with it

Residence 3

📍Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens, London W8 4PX, United Kingdom

1981 – 1997

“My apartment at Kensington was never quite what I'd imagined a royal home would be, but there was warmth in it when the boys were small and the formality dropped away. I chose this palace partly because it stands at the edge of the public park: I could walk into Kensington Gardens with William and Harry on ordinary mornings and feel, briefly, almost like anyone else. The real work — the hospital visits, the landmine campaigns — began from this desk.”

👍 LovedThe garden views, and the proximity to Hyde Park where we could escape the formality of palace life
👎 DislikedThe surveillance — the sense that every movement within these walls was observed and reported
