“Andre Romelle Young was born in Compton, California, in February 1965, when his mother, Verna, was just sixteen. She worked two jobs to support the family, and found relief in her R&B records, which filled the house with music. Andre was mostly raised by his grandmother in the New Wilmington Arms housing project in Compton, and the family moved often, living in Compton, Carson, Long Beach, Watts and South Central Los Angeles. When his mother married Warren Griffin Jr., Andre gained a stepbrother, Warren, who would later rap as Warren G. Compton in the 1970s and 1980s was troubled by gang violence, and in 1976 Andre was moved from Vanguard Junior High to the safer Roosevelt Junior High. He went to Centennial High School in Compton, then to Fremont High School in South Central, but his grades were poor, and he couldn't get into an apprenticeship at Northrop Aviation. What he loved was music: hearing Grandmaster Flash's The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel inspired him, and he spent his nights at a club called the Eve After Dark, watching DJs and rappers, until he began DJing there himself. He was a natural at mixing records and finding the perfect beat. In the mid-1980s he joined the World Class Wreckin' Cru, and in 1987 he formed N.W.A with Eazy-E and Ice Cube, whose album Straight Outta Compton put the city on the map. His solo album The Chronic, and his work with Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar, made him one of the most influential producers in history. He co-founded Beats, and has funded a new performing arts centre at Compton High School.”
