📍Compton, CA, USA
1964 – 1986“I was born Eric Lynn Wright in Compton, California, in September 1964, the son of Richard Wright, a postal worker, and Kathie, a grade school administrator. Compton was a working-class Black city south of Los Angeles, and as I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, gangs and crime were taking hold of its streets. I was small and quick, with a sharp sense of humour, and my parents worked hard to give me a good home. I didn't like school, and I dropped out in tenth grade, though later I earned my GED. For a while I made money on the streets, which was dangerous work. I loved music, especially the funk and the new sounds of hip-hop and electro coming out of Los Angeles, and I knew the young DJs and rappers around Compton, like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. In 1987, using the money I had made, I co-founded my own record label, Ruthless Records, with the music manager Jerry Heller, determined to build something real. I wasn't even planning to rap at first, but when another group turned down the song Boyz-n-the-Hood, which Ice Cube had written, Dre convinced me to record it myself. That song became a hit, and with Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella I formed N.W.A, and our album Straight Outta Compton in 1988 put Compton on the map and changed hip-hop forever. I also signed Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. People called me the godfather of gangsta rap. In 2016, N.W.A was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Compton remembers the little guy who built an empire.”
