📍Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
1920 – 1939“I was born in January 1920 at Via Dardanelli 10 in Rimini, then a sleepy little town on the Adriatic that came alive each summer with holidaymakers, and I lived in several houses around the old centre — Corso d'Augusto, Via Gambalunga, Via Dante — until I left for Rome at nineteen. My father was a travelling salesman of coffee and sweets; my mother came from Rome. As a boy I drew caricatures of everyone, adored the travelling circuses that came to town, and lost myself at the Cinema Fulgor, where I later drew portraits of film stars for the posters. The great white Grand Hotel on the seafront, with its rich foreigners and dances I could only watch from outside, was the symbol of every forbidden desire. Rimini's fog, its winter beach, the fascist parades, the lads loafing in the square, the fireworks and the passing ocean liner — I put all of it into Amarcord, which means I remember in our dialect. Rimini now has the Fellini Museum, spread across the Fulgor cinema and the old castle, and I am buried in the town.”
